Respiratory Wellnessश्वास
Ease everyday respiratory discomfort the traditional way.
Breath is governed in Ayurveda by prana vayu, the aspect of vata seated in the chest and head, moving through the pranavaha srotas — the channels of breathing. Comfort here is treated as a question of what those channels are carrying.

About Respiratory Wellness
Kapha in the chest
Kapha is the principle of structure and moisture, and in the right measure it keeps the respiratory passages supple. In excess, its heaviness and dampness are held to accumulate and obstruct. Classical practice therefore favours herbs that are warm, pungent and drying in this territory — chosen to counter those qualities rather than to suppress the body's response.
Season and routine
Ayurveda expects kapha to accumulate in the cold, damp part of the year and gives seasonal guidance accordingly — warm food, warm drink, and care around cold and damp exposure. Much of the traditional approach is preventative, aimed at the season rather than at the episode.
Questions about respiratory wellness
- What is prana vayu?
- Prana vayu is the sub-type of vata seated in the head and chest, governing breathing and the intake of what sustains us.
- Is this suitable during an acute breathing problem?
- Difficulty breathing needs medical attention. Please seek it first; traditional formulations are not a substitute for urgent care.
- Should I speak to a practitioner first?
- Ayurveda treats the person, not the label. What suits one constitution may not suit another, so speak to a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before beginning any formulation, and keep your physician informed if you are already under treatment.
